Max

Max Herriot, Principal Director

Max is one of the founding directors of Herriot and Melhuish Architecture.
He teamed up with John Melhuish to form HMA in 1997 and has been involved in the design of a number of the key projects completed during this period. Previously he worked for a London based practice, Michael Anvett Associates, from 1984 - 1988 before returning to New Zealand.

Max has a broad experience across a range of building types including commercial building refurbishments, hospitality projects, commercial fit outs, and more recently larger scale commercial campus projects including the Vogel Integrated Campus and the Bowen Integrated Campus.

His focus has been on initial design concepts, design development, through to coordination of documentation, with a specific interest in detail as well as structural solutions, providing a connection to his engineering background

John

John Melhuish, Principal Director

John is one of the founding directors of Herriot and Melhuish Architecture.

Previously, he worked in a small practice in London, then joined Athfield Architects in 1987, until the formation of HMA in 1997.
John has experience in concept design, detailed design and delivery of a wide range and scale of projects, from residential alterations through to exhibition design and commercial office development.

John has a particular interest in the contemporary adaptive re-use of heritage buildings, and has a strong emphasis on the craft of detail in the design process.

He has a good understanding of working within large and diverse project teams, with a focus on quality through the co-ordination of other design disciplines.

Since 2005 John has been an appointed member of the Wellington City Council's Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the Wellington Waterfront.

Alistair

Alistair Scott, Director
BBSc, BArch (Hons) 1984, ANZIA, Registered Architect

Alistair worked at Warren & Mahoney Architects and Athfield Architects from 1984-87. From 1987-89, he worked in London, including the office of Terry Farrell. Here he worked on a number high profile master plans around the UK.  This work involved urban plan development and close collaboration with DEGW on office layouts and planning.

From 1990-2001, Alistair studied and worked in Italy, becoming the managing director of a company specialized in art conservation contracts for the Catholic Church and the Italian State. He was involved in setting up a number of new museums and exhibitions during this period and developed a thorough understanding of conservation theory.

Alistair has worked in collaboration with HMA since 2002, joining full-time in 2005 and becoming a Director in 2007.  In that time he has run a number of projects with responsibilities covering design, documentation and on-site work.  He has also furthered his training in the area of Team Management and Leadership.

Duval

Duval O'Neill, Director
BArch, ANZIA, Registered Architect

Having worked on an extensive range of projects in Southland, Fiordland and Central Otago, Duval became a Registered Architect in 1995.  From 1996 he spent three years working in architectural practices in London, on a broad range of large-scale urban regeneration projects, commercial developments and high quality roof-top housing developments.

After returning to New Zealand in 2000, Duval worked with Stephenson and Turner (NZ) Ltd for eighteen months on large scale commercial projects and became an Associate.

He joined HMA in 2002, working on commercial and residential projects. In January 2005 Duval became an Associate, established the HMA Christchurch office and in 2007 he became a Director.

Ken

Ken Davis, Manager Auckland office

Ken was born in Nelson in 1959, graduating from Otago University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Geography. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture from Auckland University in 1987.

Ken joined Athfield Architects shortly after graduating and became project architect on several high profile award winning projects including Wellington Civic Centre and Wellington Public Library.

From 1992 to 2001, Ken was Design Director of Custance Associates winning several awards for residential and commercial projects completed during this time.

In 2001, Ken Davis Architects was established to focus on a range of commercial, institutional and residential projects. Since its formation, Ken Davis Architects has worked in close association with HMA.

Ken was President of Wellington's Architecture Centre from 1991-1993 and is a Visiting Lecturer at the Victoria University School of Architecture. He has recently been appointed to the Wellington City Council Waterfront Development Subcommittee. He is a Registered Architect and member of the NZIA.

Since January 2005 Ken has been running the Auckland office of HMA.
