This new building for a commuter railway station is a striking public amenity, providing an appealing rail passenger gateway to the bustling inner city suburb of Newmarket. Located in and above the existing rail corridor, the modern station is easily accessible to pedestrians from the existing Newmarket street system and integrates perfectly with the adjacent apartment building and public square. HMA assisted Opus International Consultants in the re-design from the original concept and in the documentation phases of this project.

“The tight horizontal constraints of the site have led to an elegant vertical slip of a station offering rear window views of the surrounding neighbourhood. The vertical circulation of people and air is deftly managed. The map of the past conditions of the site reinforces a slight sense of nostalgia for the English train station.” NZIA Awards Jury 2010
