Nga Waka Winery
NZIA New Zealand Award, 2003
NZIA Local Award, 2002
Located in the boutique wine settlement of Martinborough in the Wairarapa, this project includes a winery, dry store, equipment shed and wine-maker’s office which have been completed as part of a master plan for the award-winning Nga Waka winery complex.
Undertaken in stages, the larger form (stage 1) is orientated north-south and split into two parts: the winery proper and the dry store. They are separated by an open service zone. The smaller element (stage 2) is orientated perpendicular to the winery, creating a walkway in the space between the two buildings. The formal nature of the architecture continues into the landscape; low gabion walls and pebble gardens echoing the nearby riverbeds.
“A careful composition of volumes and elements combined with the expressive articulation of structural components has taken the humble New Zealand shed to a new level” NZIA Awards Jury, 2003.
