NGA WAKA WINERY “A careful composition of volumes and elements combined with the expressive articulation of structural components has taken the humble New Zealand shed to a new level” NZIA Awards Jury, 2003. A winery and dry store (stage one) and a equipment shed and wine-maker’s office (stage two) has been completed of a master plan for a winery complex in Martinborough. The larger form (stage 1) is orientated north-south and split into two parts: the winery proper and the dry store. They are separated by an open service zone. The smaller element (stage 2) is orientated perpendicular to the winery, creating a walkway in the space between the two buildings. The orthogonal, formal nature of the architecture continues into the landscape; low gabion walls and pebble gardens echo the nearby riverbeds. |
