REMBRANDT SUITS, NAENAE Surely a factory in an industrial suburb is just a shed? Economics dictate the crudest solutions? We do not think so. Our development of a smart, contemporary face to the Rembrandt Suits factory in Upper Hutt demonstrates that an economical design can be crisp, and project a strong, professional image for our clients. A few well-chosen interventions to the heterogeneous fabric of an existing factory efficiently and effectively transformed the impression given by the building. New entry, reception, offices, cafeteria and showroom facilities were created. Clear definition to the approach and positioning of the building transform the visitor’s experience. Careful lighting – including rooflights – and a simple palette of materials (metal, glass, plastered block) establish a contemporary feel. Slatted timber screens separate and soften staff areas. Industrial premises cannot be extravagant but they can be well designed, achieving more and working harder for their proprietors. |
