VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON – RECREATION CENTRE, WELLINGTON Resene NZIA Local Award 2006 A complete and thorough re-imagination of the building has successfully addressed the shortcomings of the existing complex. Upgraded, the building is able to meet current and future needs. The complicated existing structure was simplified by carefully articulated insertions, and with rational planning, to provide stunning views over the city. This vision and attention to detail has helped to make the recreation centre a popular and much-used facility. Accessibility, services, way finding and connection to the campus and city were all radically improved. This project demonstrates that re-use and redevelopment of existing structures is not only economically and ecologically sustainable but can produce an architecturally successful and functionally excellent result. |
